An inspired design journey comes to life in the Thao woven basket.

Città designer Nikolai Sorensen drew inspiration from Vietnam’s vibrant street markets, where vendors display fresh produce in large, shallow plastic baskets. This reinterpretation replaces plastic with sustainable bamboo and features a bold, dynamic colour palette. Display as an art piece or as a functional storage solution.

Each basket is handwoven in a small village in Northern Vietnam, using traditional techniques passed down through generations. This craftsmanship celebrates artistry and makes each basket one of a kind.

The Thao woven basket was conceptualised by Città designer Nikolai Sorensen during his time living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. The name “Thao” gives a nod to the suburb where Nikolai and his young family lived.

Street markets are a large part of daily life, and Nikolai was captivated by the sight of vendors displaying fresh produce in oversized, shallow plastic baskets. 

“These market baskets reflect traditional forms, though now crafted from modern materials like plastic,” explains Nikolai. “In Vietnam, there’s a fascinating interplay of tradition and modernity. To me, these baskets embody this dynamic push and pull.”

“I wanted to reimagine the baskets by reintroducing natural materials and traditional weaving techniques,” says Nikolai.

Nikolai then collaborated with Città designer Imogen Tunnicliffe to develop a bold, modern colour palette.

The colours reflect the vibrancy of the market, creating playful visual interest through interwoven bamboo strips.

Artisanal Craftsmanship

Each Thao basket is handwoven in Northern Vietnam using techniques passed down through generations. Nikolai visited the small village as the design took shape.

“It was a privilege to partner with a supplier who preserves this artistry,” says Nikolai. “The women were so welcoming and proud to share their craft. Each basket is a tribute to their skill, celebrating the beauty of tradition, reimagined for today.”
