A Colour-Led Design Journey

On a visit to India in 2018, our design team chanced upon the manufacturer. They were drawn to the material and technique but wanted to add our personality with colour.

“Often seagrass is made into undyed or neutral-toned items,” says Città designer Imogen Tunnicliffe. “We liked the idea of a natural material being turned on its head and made into highly colourful items.”

“It is hugely fun designing with colour. Although you have to be quite disciplined and thoughtful when combining colours, so it doesn’t descend into chaos.

”Through close collaboration and sampling, the Pinto range was created.

“Earthy undertones allow the colours to be fun and bold, but also easy to live with and provide longevity,” says Imogen.

“I love the way the natural fibre takes on the colour, creating different tones within each piece.”

Made with Seagrass

At Città, we value the use of quality, responsibly sourced materials.

Pinto is made with seagrass, a flowering plant that readily grows in shallow coastal waters. Seagrass is fast-growing, durable, and naturally biodegradable, making it a sustainable option for products.

The natural charm softens living spaces and adds tactile texture.

A Celebration of Craftsmanship

Imogen returned to India in 2023 where she enjoyed a first-hand experience of seeing the Pinto designs come to life.

“Visiting the factory was fascinating. The seagrass is twisted and coiled into long strands before being carefully hand-dyed. The strands are strung out along the rooftop to dry in the sun,” explains Imogen.

“It was incredible to see the artistry and craftsmanship involved. It’s so beneficial to understand the process so you are aware of the limitations and possibilities.”
